Sanctuary for the thirsty,
Fearful cheater, fleeing
A brother’s vengeance.
Oasis after Bethel’s “waste
Howling wilderness”, a place
To be found – surprise!
– among kin, receives a cousin,
A wife, the hope of children:
Surely God is in this place –
Fulfilling ancient promises –
And he knew it not.

Sanctuary for the outcast,
Trudging out for water
In the midday heat, avoiding
Society’s muttered scorn.
Sheltering shame behind
Argument, stumbles upon
The Messiah, receives a role
Gathering a new people
For God, here in this place –
Fulfilling ancient promises –
And she knew it not.

Sanctuary for the grumblers,
Frustrated with self and life,
Striking at desert rocks, which gush
Crystal fountains, torrents,
Living, healing water – the rocks
Were we and the streams flow
Now from within, to quench the
Thirsts of all peoples, who say
“Surely God is in these people –
Fulfilling ancient promises –
And we knew it not.”
